Charlie Malcom Allen Jr. was born on April 26, 1985, in Haverhill, Massachusetts. He graduated from Haverhill High School in 2003 and subsequently enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he majored in Psychology with plans to attend medical school after completing his degree.
Charlie gained recognition as a skilled gamer, eventually achieving status as one of the top players globally in the game Half-Life, using the gaming handle Neo Babson Maximus.
Charlie struggled with bipolar disorder. His family noted that while his manic and depressive episodes were generally well-managed with medication and therapy, he disliked how the medication affected him. By the summer of 2007, Charlie had completely stopped taking his medication. Around this time, friends and family observed that his growing obsession with tennis was consuming a significant portion of his life. Whenever Charlie wasn’t practicing, he could be found watching professional tennis matches on television.
In September 2007, Charlie legally changed his name to Neo Babson Maximus, apparently in an effort to stand out among the distinctive names of professional tennis players.
On October 11, 2007, Charlie met his friend Mason Viau for tennis practice, during which Mason reported that Charlie appeared to be his normal self. Charlie invited Mason to a party that evening with some of the girls from the tennis team. They shared dinner and agreed to reconvene at 8:30 PM. Additionally, Charlie had plans with his sister for that night: “He was supposed to come to a bar in Providence with me, but before that happened, I noticed his Facebook account had been deleted. When I called him, he sounded scared and panicked,” she recounted.
Charlie claimed he hadn’t deleted his account and speculated that someone else had taken that action. He also mentioned that important people were after him and that his sister was in danger. When she sought clarification, he cryptically stated, “I can’t talk right now, but all the answers are in the periodic table of elements.”
At this time, Charlie left voice messages for both of his parents. He informed his father that he would be going to Florida and Mexico, while telling his mother he was heading to Texas. Both parents sensed that he sounded as if he were on the run. Mason tried to contact Charlie, who failed to show up for the party, and it turned out that Charlie’s phone had been turned off.
In the early hours of October 13, 2007, around 3:00 AM, police responded to a woman living in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, who reported that a man matching Charlie’s description had broken into her second-story bedroom. The woman stated that he claimed to be looking for his friend Mason, but upon learning that Mason did not live there, he apologized, jumped out the window, and fled into the woods. On October 14, 2007, authorities were alerted to a backpack containing school supplies found in a yard off Slocum Road, adjacent to the campus, with notebooks labeled as belonging to Charlie Allen. Just a few days later, on October 17, 2007, Charlie’s sneakers were discovered in a nearby wooded area.
The initial search efforts included the deployment of bloodhound units, as well as aerial and ground searches of local natural areas where Charlie might have been injured or deceased. These efforts extended to homeless camps, hotels, and other places frequented by transients. Shortly after the investigation commenced, Charlie’s 1999 Ford Expedition was discovered abandoned on the UMass Dartmouth campus, indicating he had likely spent some time sleeping in his vehicle.
Law enforcement received numerous reports of potential sightings, with some individuals claiming to have seen Charlie shirtless and conversing with a truck driver o...
